Workshop on XML-Based Library Applications 5. Library Applications (Part Two) XML Name Access Control Repository Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Goal of the Project Background: limitations of library systems and cataloging standards in processing multi-lingual name authority information • To build a repository for storing XML metadata about personal authors, corporate bodies, and meeting names • To enhance access to bibliographic works • To help catalogers to identify correct name headings Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Goals of the Project • As a proof of concepts: • Name access control vs authority control • The person model vs bibliographic identity • XML is an effective tool for marking up multi-lingual information • XML-format NAC data can be used flexibly Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Name Access Control (NAC) • Authority Control • Designate an authorized form of a name for use in bibliographic records • Access Control • Enrich information about a person to be used by different cataloging agencies for complying different standards • Flexible choice of authorized forms • Access Control (single authorized form) = Authority Control Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
The Person Model (1) • Adapted from FRBR • Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records. IFLA 1998 • Work -> expression -> manifestation -> item Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
The Person Model (2) • Person – a distinct author • Name – an expression addressing the person • Name Form – a manifestation of the name Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
The Person Model (3) • A person can have multiple names. • Each name form has its language attributes: script, language, romanization scheme. • A person has only one name access control record. Example: http://library.ust.hk/info/nac/nac-technical.html#2 Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
MARC XML-based (1) • Based on LC MARC XML Schema • MARC tags - <controlfield>, <datafield> elements with attributes: • @tag - tag no. • @ind1- 1st indicator • @ind2 - 2nd indicator • Subfields - <subfield> element with an attribute: • @code Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
MARC XML-based (2) • Two additional attributes: • Linking name forms @nac:nameid • Specifying script, language, and romanization scheme of the form @nac:scripts Example Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Crosswalk MARC <-> NAC • No problem in converting NAC information into MARC formats and vice versa • Now supports: • MARC21 Model A • MARC21 Model B • China MARC • EAC XML Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Communication with INNOPAC NAC Repository Put INNOPAC Authority File Get Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Splitting an NAC Record • One NAC record for one author • Generate multiple authority records as needed, i.e. 5XX (see also references) • Using a local attribute: @nac:marcid Example Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Searching & Harvesting • OAI • NAC data maintained at national or international agencies can be linked and harvested through the use of OAI protocol • ZING An SRU (Search and Retrieval by URL) interface enables retrieval of data Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Components (1) • A searchable database of name metadata in XML format • An XML NAC schema derived from LC’s MARC XML Schema. • A Web-based interface for editing • Communication of data between INNOPAC and the Repository Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Components (2) • Various formats for viewing data: MARC21 Model A and B, China MARC, MARC XML, EAC XML • An OAI (Open Archives Initiative) interface for harvesters • A ZING (Z39.50 International Next Generation) SRU Interface Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Future? • Has proven the feasibility of virtual authority file concept suggested by Tillett. http://www.ifla.org/IV/ifla67/papers/094-152ae.pdf • Multi-lingual access control data can be maintained by different regional or national agencies in XML format. • The enriched data is linked globally on the Internet for use by all information providers. Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Demonstration • Searching the Repository • Displaying an NAC record • Getting an authority record from INNOPAC • Enhancing an XML NAC record • Putting an NAC record into INNOPAC To find out more: http://library.ust.hk/info/nac/ Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
