There are 10 provinces and 3 territories in Canada. The leader of Canada is called the Prime Minister. Some symbols of Canada are the beaver and the maple leaf.

GOVERNMENT The British monarch (Queen Elizabeth II) is the head of state of Canada. Laws are made by Canada's elected federal government, which includes a parliament and a prime minister.
PEOPLE Descendents of British and French immigrants make up about half the population. They were followed by other European and Asian immigrants. Inuit people live mostly in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Many Native Canadians live on their traditional lands, but many others have moved to cities across Canada.
NATURE In Canada's forests there live bears,wolves, beavers, deer, mountain lions, and bighorn sheep and smaller animals like raccoons, otters, and rabbits. Canada's prairies in the south are home to bison and pronghorn antelope. Farther north in the forests there are moose and black bears. Canadians work hard to protect the native wildlife. Canada has 41 national parks.

GEOGRAPHY In Canada there are lakes, numerous rivers, mountains, plains, and forested valleys and swamps. Canada's north lies in the frozen Arctic, where ice and snow dominate the landscape.
