ORAL HYGIENE InitiativeMobile Clinic Baja Mexico, December 13-14th 2018
Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of Newport Beach and the “Oral Hygiene Initiative”, implemented it’s newest program in December, 2018. This new program “transported” the Clinic to the children in orphanages in the Baja Region of Mexico. Marilyn Widd and the Baja Children’s Network helped coordinate our mobile OHI mission. We created 3 teams each with approximately 5 volunteers and spread out to visit 9 orphanages within a 2 hours drive of our base in Rosarito, Mexico
Our first mission was a small orphanage with 20 children, all of whom were taken away from their families due to neglect or abuse. The kids took the day off from school just so that we could treat them. Since there were only 20 kids, we got to spend more time with each child providing care and education. In the end, we were able to gain their trust and show them just how much they were loved.
Education is the most important part of our job! If we could teach these children to brush daily we could improve their overall quality of life. Unfortunately, we saw many children with decay that easily could have been prevented with proper brushing habits and fluoride. “If we can get even one child this excited to brush their teeth, • It was a successful day!” • - Ashley Affholter
This photo warms our heart. At first, the caretakers at the orphanage didn’t know if we would be willing to help José because he was in a wheelchair. Dental Hygienist Ryan opened his arms and heart to José and left him with a sparkling clean smile. We also left him with some masks and gloves because he wanted to dress up like a dental hygienist too!
It’s more than just a “teeth cleaning”. It’s a bond and a memory that will last a lifetime. We hope that we can inspire these children to know that they can do ANYTHING that they set their minds to! “It doesn’t matter where you come from, it only matters where you are going”
We proved that we can set up our OHI Clinic anywhere. This trip was the ultimate test as we proved that we can provide services in almost any environment. We are constantly researching equipment to provide services by land, sea or air!
