  2. Building Regulations Part L2A 2013 • Building Regulations are Mandatory • Part L2A defines the energy efficiency of non domestic new buildings • Part L2B defines the energy efficiency of non domestic existing buildings • Approved Document Part L is to comply with the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) • Aim is to: Improves efficiency and build quality of projects and go towards meeting UK carbon reduction targets • The Planned Implementation for Carbon reduction on new builds Part L2A • 2006 issue = Baseline • 2010 issue = 25% improvement • 2013 issue = 44% - Consultation docs to be issued Oct 11 • 2016 issue = Estimate 58% • 2019 issue = Zero Carbon

  3. What this means?? • Strategy to date – maximise efficiency to minimise the impact. • Consultation paper due end Oct 2011?? – Likely new year • 6 months consultation • Legislation comes into force October 2013 • Register schemes pre October 2013 (12 months for a meaningful SOS)

  4. Current LA Development plan specifying BREEAM • c40% UK 100% Wales • BREEAM Pre-assessment completed • 2008 BREEAM – Model very good • 2011 BREEAM – model pass • To improve Breeam rating, costs increase significantly when going to • Good • very Good • Excellent

  5. What Proto 2013 could look like?

  6. Simply Air Under trial Tunstall Ducted air system, simple refrigeration solution, new concept, further development required. Benefits to the business • No drainage. • No fans. • No case coils. • No Case Controllers. • No water leaks. • Minimal service. • 8. Free cooling.

  7. Heating Integrated approach to heating our stores Stage 1 Stage 3 FOH Stage 2

  8. Natural Ventilation Results to date – 26th June / 27th June 2011 • External temp peak = 29.2 Deg C • Internal temp peak = 24.1 Deg C • Average temp at Peak = 23.5 Deg C

  9. Refrigerant reduction

  10. ASDA Trial of sliding lids to half glass door freezer well sections

  11. Trials

  12. New Refrigerants • Reduced GWP refrigerants combined with good system containment • Simple, cost effective, low risk, reduced energy. • R407f • R407a • Carbon trust Code of Conduct • F-Gas regs • But is it going to meet future requirements?? • Refrigerant costs up • Containment even more of a priority!! • Reduced GWP refrigeration's present an ROI opportunity. • Other new low GPW refrigerants under development. • The use of gases which also occur naturally in our atmosphere like CO2 are still very much ASDA’s radar as a solution. We must be completely confident that we have the appropriate processes in place to contain these refrigerant types. We can not allow all of our hard work we have done in the area of containment to be undone by complacency.

  13. The worlds largest retailer. • Collaboration with the USA. • Finding efficiency through combined efforts. • Facing future challenges together. Wal-Mart Harmonisation

  14. Summary • 3C’s (Containment, Collaboration, Continue Trials) • Trials • New Refrigerants (Reduced/Low GWP) • Reduced energy • New Technology (emerging and maturing) • ROI 4 years • System integration • Heat recovery • ROI 4 years • Holistic approach • Fabric (Build quality) • HVAC • Refrigeration • Renewable • Legislation driven • Part L 2016/2019 • BREEAM • Refrigerants the future • F-Gas Review • Cost of Carbon • Wal-Mart Harmonisation • Tackling existing challenges together • Developing new technology together • Market integration
