Welcome to Bantaskin Primary School’s Wider Achievement Session.
Wider Achievement Many young people get formal qualifications at school. However learning also takes place outside the classroom, at home and in the wider community. Achievement covers learning in other areas of the life of the school, and in the variety of activities children and young people are involved in, for example: hobbies and interests youth work volunteering
Why is Wider Achievement important? Learning through a range of wider experiences and activities will help children to develop important skills (skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work). The skills they develop will help them as they grow up and eventually enter the world of work. We need to recognise the full range of achievements and help our children and young people understand the skills they have. It is important that they are able to demonstrate and describe these skills to others, and build on these skills. It is important that you encourage your child to let their school know about their achievements beyond the classroom. Parentzone
Through recognising and supporting children’s achievements we can help them to: • Develop their confidence and motivation for learning. • Reflect on their learning and plan appropriate next steps.
How do we promote Wider Achievement in Bantaskin Primary? Whole school programme of wider experiences. P1-5 ‘Be All You Can Be’ awards programme. P6 JASS Bronze Award P7 JASS Silver Award
In school children will work with their class towards achieving certificates: Adventurer Discoverer Explorer Creator
P1-5 ‘Be All You Can Be’ • P1-5 programme has 2 levels: • Core Level - expected that all children will achieve by end of P5 (many will achieve this earlier). • Advanced Level – for all children who have achieved the Core Level and need further challenge.
Both levels are divided into 4 sections –Looking after MyselfFood and DrinkBeing ActiveLife Skills
Getting started. Target sheet sent home (targets already achieved will be indicated). Parent and child to check and update to show any current achievements. Parent and child to identify up to 3 targets to focus on for an agreed timescale (usually 4/6 week block. Focus section might be set in school). Target sheet is returned to school.
Developing skills • Targets set (with support from parent) will form part of children’s homework. • This will allow time for family and friends to support children to reach their goals. • Some children may need more time/support to reach some targets. • Regular check-ins will take place in school to find out how children are getting on with the targets they have set.
Celebrating Success • Parent signs to show child has achieved target(s). (Optional comment via Twitter etc) • Child demonstrates/explains skill achieved to peers/teacher. • Child’s success is celebrated and targets recorded as achieved in folder. • When all Core targets are achieved in a section, child awarded badge at assembly.
Continuing the Challenge • Children who achieve all the Core targets should move to the Advanced level. • At this level, children choose and set their own targets. (Support will be given in school – children can choose from an agreed class list but may have their own ideas which link to areas of personal interest outwith school). • Timescales should be agreed and monitored.
P6 JASS – Bronze Level • All Falkirk Cluster P6s participate: • Adventure • Get Active, Stay Active • My Interests • Me and My World • Support given in school and time allocated for developing skills. Bronze badge and certificate at end of session.
P7 JASS – Silver Level • All Falkirk Cluster P7s participate: • Adventure– Residential or day experience • Get Active, Stay Active • My Interests • Me and My World (John Muir Trust) • Support given in school and time allocated outwith school for developing skills. Silver badge and certificate at end of session.
