IT Projects … • Standish Group’s famous Chaos report garnered attention starting in the mid 90s, in particular based on very high reported project failure rates ( ~ 90% are not successful). More recent data from their 2013 report shows improvement, but still only 39% of projects are successful, with 61% either ‘failed’ or ‘challenged’. Source:The Standish Group Reports

Project Contract Management • Fixed-Price Contracts • A specific price is agreed for the good or service being sold. In project terms, the buyer and seller will agree on a well-defined deliverable for a specific price. In this type of contract the bigger risk is borne by the seller. • Cost ReimbursableContracts • The costs which are allowable will be defined in the contract. In this type of contract more risk is carried by the buyer as the final cost us uncertain • Time and MaterialsContracts • This type of contract is a cross between fixed-price and cost-reimbursable contracts. They can resemble cost-reimbursable contracts as the full cost of completing the deliverable is not know at the outset.
End-User Involvement • Involving users into software development life cycle • User-centered analysis • Workshops / focus-group meetings • Request management system • Call centers • Field visits
Training and Dissemination Facilities • End-user training and dissemination • User satisfaction and acceptance • Effective usage of software • Positive attitudes toward software • Training Methods • Face-to-face in-class training • Trainer training • Distance education programs • Seminars • Instructional Materials
Security Considerations • Authorization management • Privacy policies • Software Security Management • Security Standards
Common Pitfalls • Not involving all stakeholders adequately • Not taking account the unforeseen: Requirement changes • Waterfall methodologies • Giving particular importance on hardware much more than software • Working with unqualified teams • Emphasis on cost or scope rather than quality • Ignoring the importance of non-functional requirements • Availability • Reliability • Security • Usability • Supportability • Incompetence in system and software architecture
