Importance of Patent Registration • patent law is the main branch of intellectual property law that deals with new inventions • once a patent is granted according to patent law, its exclusive rights can be enjoyed by the owner for 20 years. • Patent registration gives owners the legal right to exclude others from using, making, selling and importing an invention for a limited period of years. • Patent law falls under civil law, if any person infringes the registered patent, the original patent owner can enforce his rights, by suing him.

For granting patents, requirements placed on the patentee, and the extent of the exclusive rights varies between countries. • In modern usage, the term patent usually refers to the right granted to anyone who invents something new, useful and non-obvious. Some other types of intellectual property rights are also called patents in some jurisdictions.
