  3. WHAT TRAINING IS NEEDED FOR YOUR FUTURE CAREER ? What type of training or program of study do you need to get your dream job? • Types of training include: • 4-Year College/University • 2-Year College (Community or Private) • Trade School • Military • Apprenticeship OR go right to WORKING in your DREAM PROFESSION!

  4. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR PROGRAM OF STUDY? • RESEARCH! • Research what is required to get into your desired program of study • For example: • Is there an application? Paper or online? • Do I need to send my transcript? • Do they require a letter of recommendation?

  9. 4 YEAR COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY • APPLICATION FEE WAIVERS: You will qualify for a college application fee waiver. You will need to fill out a form with your School Counselor. • When you complete your application online, do not pay. You will have to sign back in, after the college application fee waiver has been sent to the college, and then submit your application. • If you applied to your college through the Common App, you will have to request a fee waiver which will have to be verified by your school counselor.

  10. 4 YEAR COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY • SAT/ACT Exams: These are College Entrance Exams that practically all 4-year colleges and universities require you to take in order to be admitted to their school. • SAT Dates • NOVEMBER 2 – register by October 3 • DECEMBER 7– register by November 8 • ACT Dates: • DECEMBER 14 – register by November 8 • Late registration dates posted online and in the school counselor’s office • Fee waivers available in the school counselor’s office – 2 fee waivers per student

  11. 2 YEAR COLLEGES • Careers that require a degree from a 2-year College: • Dental Hygienist • Radiation Therapist • Web Developer • Licensed Vocational Nurse • Air Traffic Controller • Computer Programmer • Police Officer • Funeral Service Worker • Paralegal

  13. 2 YEAR COLLEGES APPLICATION: 1) You will need to complete an application online or in paper-form. 2) SAT/ACT exams may not be required for 2-year colleges. Check with the school!

  14. TRADE SCHOOLS • Careers that require a certification from a Trade School • Electrician • Plumber • Welder • Aircraft Mechanic • Cosmetologist • Chef • Massage therapist

  15. TRADE SCHOOLS • Examples of Trade Schools where you can earn a certification in your area of expertise: Most take 8 months to 2 years to complete

  16. TRADE SCHOOLS APPLICATION: 1) You will need to complete an application online or in paper-form. 2) Some might require you to take an admissions test which you would schedule with an admissions counselor.

  17. MILITARY Branches of the military:

  18. MILITARY Contact a recruiter from the branch you are interested in to start the process. Ask your school counselor for the recruiter’s information. You will need to take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) to determine your eligibility for enlistment in the military.

  19. APPRENTICESHIPS Apprenticeships is proven approach for preparing workers for jobs while meeting the needs of business for a highly-skilled workforce. For more information on apprenticeships, check out https://www.apprenticeship.gov/

  20. SENDING SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS Regardless of where you are applying, it is likely you will need to provide additional documentation such as a transcript or a letter of recommendation. All request forms are located in the counseling office. We mail all supplemental materials and/or we can submit them through Naviance.

  21. Requesting Transcript For every college/trade school you apply to, you will need to complete a transcript request form. The transcript request form (pink sheet) is located in the School Counselor office. Needs to be signed by parent/guardian Needs to be given to your school counselor

  22. LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION • To request a Letter of Recommendation: • Use the purple sheet located in School Counselor Office. Fill out the sheet and provide it to the individual you are requesting to write a letter. • We recommend you collect at least 3 letters of recommendation • Be sure to provide the person with enough time to write the letter! • Remember, not all schools require a letter!

FAFSA • FAFSA stands for: Free Application for Federal Student Aid • This online form MUST be filled out to receive any form financial aid • 10/1 is first day you can apply • FAFSA Completion Night at Academy Park • 11/25 from 6:00PM-8:00PM • Parent/Guardian must attend • Can complete your FAFSA that night!
