DEFINITION Schoology is a school website where teachers, students, and parents can access to increase education within schools through the use of technology. Teachers can use the site to take attendance, use an online grade book, post discussion questions, homework, files, links, and other information. Students are able to access all class information, take quizzes and test, upload files through online dropbox, participate in class discussions, stay organized with a school calendar, download and print files from home, and much more. Parents are able to observe their student’s assignments and calendars while staying involved in their education
ADVANTAGES • Has a more ‘Facebook’ feel (you can ‘like’ people’s posts and comments) • It is very easy for students to upload their work from their mobile phone. • You can individually assign work/assignments to help differentiate your class • You can create ‘discussions’ that are separate to the ‘updates’ section
Attendance records • Easier to delete accounts • Ability to post comments/documents when providing feedback • Time limit options • Updates • Templates for classes • Google compatible: conference/edit with students and collaborative work • Soft limitations
Direct contact with teachers • Teachers provide parent codes • Album/galleries of pictures • More parts - a bigger learning system • Closer to BlackBoard used in colleges • Blogging/class discussions • Easier to add clubs and groups • Whole school system set up
Students see multiple classes/groups/messages in one place from multiple teachers • Ability to create multiple courses and folders • Structured, detailed, and organized • More detailed option for creating student profile
DISADVANTAGES • It is still difficult to upload any student work that is video or image based. • It connects your class as a ‘course’ not a ‘class’. • It takes longer to learn that Edmodo, as it has more features (although these features are easier to use than Edmodo). • Help section requires using a search box • Grades accessed only through home page
Learning styles and preferences not included when creating student profiles • Having to import Calendars • Codes for students are too long • Hard to navigate quiz and attendance pages • Requires too much time to learn the system, frustrating • More sophisticated and challenging than Edmodo
CONCLUSION • Schoology is a Learning Management System(LMS) for schools, higher education institutions, and corporations that allow users to create, manage, and share content and resources. Also known as a course management system (CMS) or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), the cloud-based platform provides tools needed to manage any classroom or blended learning environment. • The Schoology platform was designed by Jeremy Friedman, Ryan Hwang and Tim Trinidad in 2007 while still undergraduates at Washington University in St. Louis.MO. Originally designed for sharing notes, additional features and functionality continue to be added.
Mobile technology is arguably the most important day-to-day technology of the 21st century. Schoology's mobile apps allow instructors and students to stay connected anytime, anywhere. Assignments can be assigned, submitted, graded, and returned without losing the freedom of true mobility.
