MAGPI serves educational communities through engaging videoconference programs in various subjects targeting students of all ages. Partnerships with institutions and multimedia elements enhance the learning experience.

What is MAGPI? MAGPI is a regional aggregation point for Internet2 that serves the Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey research and education communities. Programming Snapshot (Since July 1, 2006): We have organized 80 programs for our K-12 Members. 200 + Schools have participated in our programs. More than 12,000 participants have been involved in our programs.
Content Areas: In what content areas are your members/subscribers looking for programming? • Target Age Group: What is the target age group? • Involvement: In what ways will members/subscribers want to be involved in the planning process? How involved do you want members and subscribers to be in the planning process? • Time: How much time will members/subscribers be willing to prepare for a program or event? • Length of Project: Are members/subscribers looking for short-term or long-term projects and programs?

Interactive “Meet the Author” Videoconference Events • 1 Hour, 15 Minutes In Length • Series Targets a Variety of Grade Levels • Partnerships with other Universities and Publishing Companies MAGPI’s Contribution: Educated Authors about Videoconferencing; Donated our Facilities or Found other University Facilities; Publicized the Event; Determined Event Structure
Employs Kids Across The World Curriculum and Literacy Through Photography • Teaches About Photojournalism and Global Cultures • 3 Month Series that Targeted Students in grades 4-6 • Cumulative Photojournalism Project and Sharing Session MAGPI’s Contribution: Educated Joan about Videoconferencing; Worked with to Adapt her Curriculum and Develop Activities; Donated our Facilities; Publicized the Event
Events should be more than just a talking head. Use visuals, animation and multi-media to enhance videoconference events. • Videoconferencing as a supplement. Add a videoconferencing element to existing programs or projects. • Leverage Resources. Each participating site in a videoconference event will have different types of technology resources. Put them to use!
Multimedia Journey Through Human Body • Teaches About the Immune System, HIV and AIDS • Interactive Q&A Session • Targets Students in Grades 9-12; Community Colleges • Ongoing Offering MAGPI’s Contribution: Educated Phil about Videoconferencing; Worked with Phil to Develop a 1.25 Hour Program; Donated our Facilities; Publicized the Event; Collected Feedback
Regional Fundraiser Event with Kick-Off and Wrap-Up Videoconference Programs • Raises Money for Pediatric Cancer • Partnership between Schools, Hospitals, IUs, and Alex’s Lemonade Organization MAGPI’s Contribution: Head Planning Committee; Publicized Event; Solicited Participation; Maintain the Project Website; “Pitched” the Initial Idea; Communicate Information to All Participating Organizations
Planning Process. Solicit student and teacher feedback during the planning process or invite them to be on the planning team. • Videoconference Event. Assign students roles in the videoconference event.
Classes of students portrayed different famous Americans during a mystery game • Initial idea came from a member teacher • Ran 2 Games: one for students in grade 2-3; one for students in grades 4-5 MAGPI’s Contribution: Publicized idea; put together game instructions; coordinated technical and content logistics
Partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Physics Department • Videoconference presentation that included live microscope images, power point presentation, live demonstrations from the physics lab and real-time student data analysis • Physics Department worked with Participating High School Teachers. MAGPI’s Contribution: Donated Equipment; Promoted the Event; Educated the Physics Department Faculty about Videoconferencing; Coordinated Communication
Partnership with National Constitution Center, Internet2 Commons, Partner Universities and Participating Schools • Students researched and performed/read sections of the Constitution in celebration of National Constitution Day • 43 schools across the country participated (21 states represented) MAGPI’s Contribution: Coordinated technical logistics/testing; promoted event; solicited university partnerships
