  3. Who was she really? • Pocahontas was the daughter of Powhatan. He was the leader of an alliance of about 30 other groups found in Tidewater Virginia. • Born in 1595 at Werowocomoco, Virginia • Different Names: Pocahontas= childhood name like a nick name. Matoaka=her name early in life. Amonute= name as she got older. • She was the favorite daughter of her father, he had 27 children some accounts say. She was his princess.

  4. Pocahontas This statue is taken from drawings By John White of the Native Americans in this region. This Could be what she may have looked Like as a young girl.

Pocahontas was primarily linked to the English colonists through Captain John Smith who arrived and helped to settle Virginia in 1607 • The English had several encounters with the Tsenacommacah Indians, and Smith was captured by a hunting party led by a close relative of Pocahontas during that year and brought to Powhatan’s home.

After the capture, the details become different about the relationship between John Smith and Pocahontas. • We know she got married, returned to England, met the Queen and King of England, had a child and was very popular and had a relationship with John. • The question is which John and what type of relationship.
