Strategic Planning Process • Widespread participation at all levels within the organization • Examining mission and values statements • Asking fundamental questions • Examining external and internal processes
Develop a Mission Statement • Reflection of the organizations fundamental purpose • If the organization has a mission statement in place, use it as a tool for the strategic plan development
Mission Statement Example Social Work Program Mission Statement The mission of the social work program at Lewis-Clark State College is to prepare students for entry-level generalist practice. We are committed to the preparation of professional social workers who possess the knowledge, skills, and values to address the needs and potential of individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations. Drawing on an ecological, strengths based perspective, the program prepares students for the pursuit of a more just, humane society. Graduates are prepared for practice with all populations, particularly the oppressed and at-risk members of society.

Dynamic Planning as Part of the Strategic Plan • To address changes when they occur and modify the strategic plan as necessary • Review mission statement, goals, objective, and strategic plan • Modify and re-draft action plans • Key elements are flexibility and experimentation • Annual dynamic review or other methods of feedback and continuous review
Setting Realistic, Obtainable, and Measurable Goals and Objectives • Goals represent long term endeavors over a period of three to five years, or more • Objectives represent relevant, attainable, measurable, and time-limited ends to be achieved • They must fit within the general mission and goals of the organization
Writing an Impact Objective • Use an action verb • State only one specific result per objective • Make objective statements realistic • To increase the percentage of processed mental health applications from 30% to 40% by June, 2005
Service Objectives • Tally of services rendered • Specificity • To serve 200 homeless clients in the program year • To conduct five disability awareness presentations in the Lewiston School District by December 2005
Operational Objectives • Convey the intent to improve the general operation of the organization • To provide five in-service trainings pertaining to family-centered practice to all staff within six months
Product Objectives • Are designed to provide a tangible outcome presumed to benefit a target population to achieve an impact or service objectives. • To provide a media effort in Lewiston on disability awareness by May 2005
Putting it all together Goal: To improve service to the homeless in the Lewis-Clark Valley Impact Objective: To decrease the number of homeless families waiting for shelter from and average of five per month to two per month by June 2005 Service Objective: To place three additional homeless families in transitional shelters each month in the Lewis-Clark Valley Operational Objective: To obtain and additional $60,000.00 grant from the Department of Health & Human Services by March 2005 Product Objective: To recruit transitional housing placements in the Lewis-Clark Valley by May 2005 Product Objective: To develop a media effort to inform the general public, businesses, organizations, and the homeless on the availability of transitional shelters by May 2005
