  1. Evil King John? Today’s Objective – To look at facts and opinions about King John and form our own opinions

  2. Quick Fire Round: Test your knowledge • Where did King John loose land that his father had gained? • Who did King John replace as king (it was his brother who had been really well respected)? • Which group of people did King John upset the most? • What did King John sign in 1215? • Why was he excommunicated from the Catholic church?

  3. Good King, bad King? • You have been given a set of cards. You must sort out the cards into two piles. One pile should have points that suggest John was a good King. The other pile should have points that argue John was a bad King.

  4. Fact or Opinion • Once you have decided upon good King, bad King, you must decide which cards show fact and which show opinion? • Take away the cards that you think show opinions? • What are you now left with?

  5. Task • You should now be left with some good and bad facts about King John. Create a diagram or a table to record these points.

  6. Plenary: using opinions • Historians do have to use peoples opinions to find out about events and people throughout history. • What are the dangers involved in using peoples opinions? • How can we safely use opinions in historical enquiries, such as finding out if King John was a good or a bad king?
