  1. (Yep, there are more….) Basic Parts of Literature

  2. PLOT= STORYLINE • What is the beginning, middle, and end of the story? • All literature has a plot structure made up of conflicts. Climax=biggest conflicts conflicts conflicts Falling Action Rising Action Exposition Resolution

  3. Characterization • WHO ARE THE CHARACTERS? • What do they look like, sound like, how would you describe them to someone? DETAILS ARE KEY HERE.

  4. Tell me about these people.

  5. How would you Characterize these people? When do these take place? Are they in the “real world?”

  6. SETTING=Time and PLACE • Always think of a Play. What is the set like?

  7. Mood Or Tone • What is the tone or mood of the story? What does the story try to make its audience feel?

  8. Where does this take place? When?

  9. When do these plots take place? Where? Take a guess.

  10. THEME • What is the story trying to TEACH? (Theme and Teach both begin with “T’s”) • Themes come in 3 forms: • Man vs. Man • Man vs. Nature • Man vs. Himself

  11. Point of View: There are 3 choicesWho is telling the story? • 1st Person: The main character is the narrator. Example: I went to the store. I bought a cat. It scratched me. • 3rd Person Limited: (the dumb narrator) He is watching the story and is not a character in it. BUT, he can only tell you what happens-NOT how characters feel or think. Example: He went to the store. He bought a cat. The cat scratched him. • 3rd Person Omniscient: All Knowing-mind reading narrator who is not in the story. Example: He went to the store. He felt lonely and thought, “I want a cat.” So he bought a cat for himself.
