BBI-JU activities in Lithuania dr. Inga Matijošytė National representative at SRG VU Life Sciences Center Institute of Biotechnology Info Day on “Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking opportunities” at MITA 16th April 2019, Vilnius
Example of BBI JU project in LT US4GREENCHEMaims to design a biorefinery concept for the complete valorization of lignocellulosic biomass that is energy and cost-efficient and based solely on green technologies. The project combines enzyme treatment methods with ultrasound pre-treatment capable of breaking up the lignocellulosic matrix with reduced energy input and minimal production of inhibitory by-products. The substrate obtained from the lignocellulosic feedstock is then used in the biochemical field and in order to produce biofuels. The Lithuanian beneficiary, JSC “Biocentras”, is a scientific-industrial company established in 1988. The leader in business and science partnership in Lithuania is performing scientific studies and experiments and developing new biological products and technologies.

Biotechnology - a tool for BBI development biotechnology Bioeconomy - the production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources and waste streams into value added products, such as food, feed, bio-based products and bioenergy.
The revenues of LT Biotech companies 1000 mln € Prognose for 2018 is made by LBTA and is based on private interviews 14 companies: Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics, Sicor Biotech, Roquette Amilina, Biotechpharma, Biok, Bioenergy LT, Biocentras, Mestila, Rapsoila, Kurana, Naujoji Ringuva, Profarma, Probiosanus
Importance of bio-based industries for the economy of LT regions and demand of its products in foreign markets • In 2016, in LT regions (counties) the value of export: • of biomass and fully biomass-based manufacturing sectors was 32.0%of the total export; • of partly biomass-based manufacturing sectorswas21.2 %of the total export. Specialization of LT regions in biomass and fully biomass-basedmanufacturing Specialization of LT regions in partially biomass-based manufacturing Export specialization (LQ) Export specialization (LQ) Specialization (LQ) according to created added value Specialization (LQ) according to created added value The greater the region’s specialization in the biomass and biomass-based manufacturing sectors, the more significant they are in the region’s export structure.
