  2. We’ve all heard it before. From • Parents • Coaches • Bosses • Military commanders We can all see the need for authority.

  3. Is Christianity any different?

  4. Unity is commanded. 1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

  5. Unity is commanded. Philippians 2:1-2 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

  6. Jesus prayed for unity. John 17:20-21 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.

  8. Contradictions abound. • Free will vs. No free will • Worship on Saturday vs. worship on Sunday • Literal body and blood vs. emblems • Hell vs. No Hell • Miraculous gifts vs. No miraculous gifts

  9. Unity can be achieved when we recognize Jesus’ authority. • Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. • Luke 6:46-49

Unity can be achieved when we recognize Jesus’ authority. • John 8:31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. • Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

  11. Abiding in Jesus’ word John 14:25-26 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

  12. Abiding in Jesus’ word John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

  13. Abiding in Jesus’ word 1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.

  14. Abiding in Jesus’ word 1 Corinthians 14:37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.

  15. Abiding in Jesus’ word 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  16. We must submit to Jesus’ authority. Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man,       But its end is the way of death. Jeremiah 10:23 O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.

  17. We must submit to Jesus’ authority. Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; Matthew 17:5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Cf. Acts 4:7-10

  18. What happens if we don’t? • Adam and Eve, Genesis 2:16-17; 3:6, 16-19 • Cain, Genesis 4:3-7, cf. Hebrews 11:4, Romans 10:17 • Nadab and Abihu, Leviticus 10:1-3, cf. Leviticus 16:12 • Uzzah, 2 Samuel 6:3, 6-7, cf. Numbers 4:5-6, 15

  19. What happens if we don’t? Matthew 7:21-24 Deuteronomy 4:2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. Revelation 22:18-19

  20. Obey the gospel today! Romans 1:16-17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

  21. Obey the gospel today! 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

  22. Obey the gospel today! John 8:24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” Luke 13:3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.

  23. Obey the gospel today! Matthew 10:32-33 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

  24. Obey the gospel today! Revelation 2:10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
