  9. Four (4) Stages of Christ’s Work Pictured in Water Baptism 1. He died…I DIED with Him 2. He was buried… I was BURIED with Him. 3. He was raised… I have a NEW LIFE in Him. 4. He ascended… I ASCENDED in Him. Lesson 5: Water Baptism

  10. I. Understanding Water Baptism E. It is a PUBLICTESTIMONY that one is willing to DIE for Christ. F. It is ATTENDING one’s own FUNERAL SERVICE. A funeral service must follow since DEATH took place when we got BORN AGAIN. Lesson 5: Water Baptism

  12. Romans 6:8-11 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Lesson 5: Water Baptism

  13. I. Understanding Water Baptism G. It is a RESURRECTION to new life (Romans 6:8-11) H. It is a SYMBOL of cleansing from sin after sincere REPENTANCE. Lesson 5: Water Baptism

  14. II. The Purpose of JESUS’ baptism (Matthew 3:13-17) Matthew 3:13-17 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" Lesson 5: Water Baptism

  15. 15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." Lesson 5: Water Baptism

  16. II. The Purpose of JESUS’ baptism (Matthew 3:13-17) The baptism of Jesus indicates that He was CONSECRATEDto God and officiallyAPPROVED by Him, as especially shown in the DESCENT of the Holy Spirit and the words of the Father . Lesson 5: Water Baptism

  17. III. A Type in the Old Testament Genesis 17:12-13, For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner--those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.

  18. III. A Type in the Old Testament Colossians 2:11-12, “In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ,12having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.” Lesson 5: Water Baptism

  19. III. A Type in the Old Testament Romans 2:28-29, “A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. 29 No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God.” Lesson 5: Water Baptism

  20. III. A Type in the Old Testament Genesis 17:12-13 Colossians 2:11-12 Romans 2:28-29 Circumcision-the cutting off of the foreskin of the males’ sex organ Water Baptism

  21. III. A Type in the Old Testament Circumcision Water baptism It signified the responsibility to faithfully serve God as a holy people in the midst of a pagan world. It is the CIRCUMCISION of the heart, a cutting away of SIN and a change of HEART. What is buried by faith in baptism is dead and POWERLESS to control our lives any longer.
