Hackers The Good, The Bad, and The Conflicted By Chris Lodge
Origins Hacker meant good programmer. Made most of the programs we use today Started groups to share programs Started meeting When they started meeting some came up with bad intentions The Bad hackers left the good groups and trashed everyone’s reputation.
The Good Work on counter-hacking. Find holes that could get hacked Write programs for fun Mess up and make viruses Work to protect whole servers Work for the government to “get” intel
The Bad Have taken down whole networks for days Steal software, music, movies, ect Sell stolen programs, music, movies, ect Hack into governments Work for dirty companies a lot of times Mainly 20 year olds and get 15 year sentences
The Confused Many hackers are misled or forced into doing illegal hacking. A lot of confused hackers are conned into doing bad things. A lot are just don’t ask don’t tell; they don’t ask what it is for so they can’t be linked to it.
Why? Many hackers are put into the bad light because of how schools teach that they are bad. Also people generalized via the bad hackers that all hackers are bad. Also only bad hackers are recognized really. People don’t think about how many good hackers there are out there making a lot of stuff that they use and enjoy every day.
Where do the bad end up? About 1 out of every 2 hackers end up being recruited by a government. The rest either go into hiding after they erase the fact that they existed or go to jail. They could fit into society, but they decide not to.
