Luke 14:25-35 Class:Middlers Unit: Book of Luke Title: Count the Cost Length of Lesson: One Hour • Materials Needed: • Box with a couple blocks • Slips of paper • Markers and pens • Watercolor paints • Cups of water • Brushes • White paper • Salt • Notebook paper • Pretzels • Measuring stick Scripture Summary: Jesus cautioned that true disciples would need to face the extreme. He also teaches about setting goals and counting the cost before starting something. Goal: To teach the children about how much it means to follow Jesus as well as teaching them about having goals. Objective: Students should be able to look at their own comment to God as well as uncompleted goals and potential new goals.
Anticipatory Set: Have the children write down goals on slips of paper. Then use the papers to create a paper chain for the room. Procedure: Give the children a few blocks and tell them to make a tower three feet high and then let them work as a team and realize it is not possible to make a three foot tower with the supplies. (five minutes) Have the children take turns reading the verses Luke 14:25-35 (ten minutes) Let the kids experiment with the effect of salt thrown on top of watercolor to create abstract art as well as write on “Luke 14:34”(fifteen minutes) Discuss goals made for the chain and think of ways to complete them as a group. (ten minutes) Eat a snack of pretzels and water. (ten minutes) Reveal more blocks and allow them to finish the tower and encourage the kids to keep their goals they have made. (ten minutes) Modifications: -if there is spare time as the children what following Jesus means . Discuss if what we do really is enough. Closure: Pray with the children about planning everything out and keeping our dreams and giving Jesus our all. .
