Lesson 51 – In Jerusalem 21:17-40 • Their “plan” to protect Paul vv. 22-26 • The Jews knew Paul had arrived • They also knew he had been with Gentiles • 4 Jews had already begun a ceremonial vow (purification…“consecration?”) • Paul should join them to “appease” the Jews
Lesson 51 – In Jerusalem 21:17-40 • The Jews’ response vv. 27-30 • When the vow was almost over, Asian Jews “stir up the crowd” & apprehend him v. 27 • They accuse Paul of trying “ruin” or “end” Judaism, and they also assume he had defiled the temple with a Gentile vv. 28-29
Lesson 51 – In Jerusalem 21:17-40 • The Jews’ response vv. 27-30 • The Asian Jews were successful…the city was “aroused,” Paul was dragged out of the temple and immediately began to be beaten v. 30

Lesson 52 – In Jerusalem 22:1-30 • Paul’s address vv. 1-21 • He speaks in the Hebrew dialect…it causes the crowd to grow silent vv. 1-2 cp. 21:40 • He reminds them of… • …his “Jewish pedigree” v. 3 • …his former opposition to Christianity vv. 4-5
Lesson 52 – In Jerusalem 22:1-30 • Paul’s address vv. 1-21 • No doubt, Paul hoped to establish some sort of “connection” with this Jewish crowd • He also relates to them the events that led to his conversion vv. 6-11 cp. 9:3-9 • He reviewed the role Ananias played vv. 12-16
Lesson 52 – In Jerusalem 22:1-30 • Paul’s address vv. 1-21 • Based upon the words the Lord told Ananias to say, Paul was to become a “witness” just like the original 12 v. 14 • We also learn the “purpose” for N.T. baptism… to wash away sins v. 16 cp. 1 Pet 3:21

Lesson 52 – In Jerusalem 22:1-30 • The Roman commander reacts vv. 24-30 • The scene “disintegrated” right before him • He had to “rescue” Paul again v. 24a • Still not knowing why the Jews were so opposed to Paul, he commanded Paul to be examined by scourging v. 24b
Lesson 52 – In Jerusalem 22:1-30 • The Roman commander reacts vv. 24-30 • While being stretched out for the scourging, Paul asked “Is it lawful to scourge a Roman who is uncondemned?”v. 25 • Upon learning this, the soldiers halt their mistreatment of Paul vv. 26-29
Lesson 52 – In Jerusalem 22:1-30 • The Roman commander reacts vv. 24-30 • Unable to scourge Paul, the commander’s “next move” was to bring him before the Sanhedrin v. 30 • Perhaps such an assembly would reveal why the Jews were so opposed to Paul
