Let’s Practice Sample School Improvement Goal • Improve reading
Improve reading… To improve reading, double the number of books checked out from the school library by May, 2005.
Selecting Goals • What is the greatest area of need? • Can we verify this with data?
School Wide Goals • What should our school wide SMART Goals be? • School wide goals are usually 1-3 year out.
School Wide Goal With in 3 years, 90% of our students will be proficient readers at their grade level.
Indicator • What indicates that this is an area of weakness? • Indicators are based on current data • Consider reviewing strands or domain where student score lower • Select broad categories for improvement
Example of Math Indicators • Basic math fact • Computational Skills • Application • Reasoning • Problem solving • Spatial relations • Statistics

From Goal to Action! • Brainstorm strategies that can help you achieve your goal • Then, evaluate: • Which are the most doable? • Which would have the biggest impact? • Which would be fun? Remember: The “best” activity or strategy means nothing if you’re not motivated to complete it.
For Each Activity… Identify: • Expected Results • When Activity will be implemented • What is needed to implement it • Persons responsible • Target audience
Getting Results • Review progress toward goals (at least once a month) • Communicate the status to team members (email works great) • Be Accountable for ALL your results • What’s Working • What’s Not • Revise goals, as needed
