PODLASKIE („Under theTrees”) is a largelyunspoiledregionin the eastern partof Poland and western Belarus. It is located betweenthe Biebrza River in the north and its natural continuation to the southernPodlaskie area, whichcontainsthe Białowieża forest.
STRATEGY FOR DEVELOPING and EVOLVING TOURISM: • The development and evolution of tourism is one priority which can be realized through: • Advancedexpansion of tourism, agrotourism, ecotourismand ”quality” tourism that respects the environment • Organizinga system of regional information and touristic promotion, • Elaborating long-range program for evolving different forms of tourism, • Improving existing bicycle paths and hiking trails
JOURNEYS TO PODLASKIE PROVINCE (2004) • Foreign tourists: 1 mln (6th place in ranking of provinces) • Most tourists were from Belarus (390 000) and Lithuania (350 000) • Shopping was the main motive for arrivals • Arrivals in package tours: 0.2 mln • Tourists stayed over more often than in other regions in the country • They were primarily short-term stays (2 - 4 days)

Tourists contaminate environment through: • Contamination of the biosphere:motorboats, water skiing, off-road motorbikes, etc. • Damaging the vegetation border while cycling, • Hiking along tourist trails, • Throwing out of waste, • Rock-climbing…

What is ECOTOURISM? Ecotourism is a type of tourism that involves travel to unspoiled locations that are rich in flora and fauna, and promotes environmental awareness and responsibility.
What is LEVEL-HEADED TOURISM? LEVEL-HEADED TOURISM – (Responsible tourism, tourism of minimal influence, alternative tourism). It provides requirements forboth modern tourists and regions fulfilling the host role, simultaneously protecting the land and offering possibilities for future expansion. Factors favoring the evolution of level-headed tourism: • Incremental pressure from regulations • Growing conciousness requiring the lowering of costs through reasonable consumption of resources • Consciousness that environmental conditions are essential for competitiveness of product • Consciousness that growth of tourism may have negative influenceon environment
