  2. African American Enrollment (2018) Total African American students (PreK-grade 12) = 646,655 • females – 318,869 • males – 327,786 ~ 38.9% of Georgia’s Students

  3. Areas for Support • Over-representation in discipline • Over-representation in low academic achievement • Over-identification in special education • Under-representation in the educator workforce • Under-representation in pathway completion, AP, and post-secondary matriculation

  4. Looking at the System: Access and Opportunity Gaps Access to courses that meet high expectations (e.g., AP, dual-enrollment,) Access to scholarships Access to schools with a positive climate Opportunity to complete the FAFSA during the school day Access to quality literacy and numeracy instruction Opportunity to take “bridge courses” Access to certified, experienced teachers Opportunity to take PSAT/SAT (and ACCUPLACER) during the school day Opportunity to engage in culturally responsive instruction Access to Quality Rated care centers Access to quality Special Education services (preschool through grade 12) Opportunity for “language nutrition” and conversational turns

Access to quality literacy/numeracy instruction • Keenville game-based early formative assessment platform • Literacy for Learning, Living, and Leading in Georgia (L4GA) grant • Literacy Think Tank and P-20 Partnerships • Increased Professional Development Offerings • Get Georgia Reading community partnerships, data summits, and program evaluation

Access to schools with a positive climate • Support Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) implementation, fidelity and sustainability • Added school climate specialists at each RESA • 1300 schools now implementing PBIS • GaDOE trainings for educators and partners • Mental health awareness • Trauma and physical factors that manifest as behavior issues • Crisis Prevention Intervention • Language training • APEX Partnership with DBHDD • Currently in 400 schools • Provides therapists in schools • Increased funding included in budget by Governor

  8. Access to quality special education services • Support implementation of, and fidelity to, Georgia’s Tiered System of Supports • Identification and supports/correction for districts that over-identify subgroups • Check and Connect Interventions
