The volcano itself-Mt. Vesuvius- • Height: 1277 meters (4190 feet) • Base: 48 kilometers (30 miles) • Location: Southern Italy near Naples • Age: 17,000 years old • Eruptions: over 50 (most famous in 79 A.D) • Scientist speculate that Mt. Vesuvius only erupts with that much force every 2000 years.
Pompeii is covered • On August 24, 79A.D,Mount Vesuvius erupted sending tons of molten ash, pumice, and sulfuric acid miles into the atmosphere. • Poisonous vapors and molten debris engulf the surrounding areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae suffocating the towns inhabitants. • The cities remained covered for almost 1700 years and weren’t excavated until 1748.
excavations The first time anything of Pompeii was uncovered was in 1599. In 1748, Spanish military leader Rocque Joaquin de Alcubierre rediscovered Pompeii in intentional excavations. During the 1860 excavation, Giuseppe Fiorelli discovered that the empty voids in the ash layer that contained human remains were the spaces left by the decomposed bodies.
