  1. Welcome to Pre-Calculus! Solon High School

  2. Mrs. Sheri Holman Education Bowling Green State University – BS in Education Ashland University - Masters in Computer Technology Experience (16 years) Solon High School 2002 – Present Wooster High School 1995 – 2002 Vermilion High School & Middle School 1992 - 1995

  3. Objectives • Explore the algebraic, numerical, graphical, and verbal methods of representing problems • Apply these concepts to real-world situations • Use technology to solve problems • Learn cooperatively as well as individually • Communicate mathematics • Make connections between mathematics and other disciplines. • Prepare your child for Advanced Placement Calculus

  4. Structure of the class Pre-Calculus is a rigorous course designed for students who intend to take Advanced Placement Calculus next year. The expectation is that students have mastered and retained the skills and concepts learned in Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. We will use a minimum amount of class time to review these skills and concepts. During this course your child will work individually, collaborate with other students and use technology to help them discover new mathematical ideas and methods. In order to be successful in this class your child will need to be a willing and active participant as they develop their mathematical understanding. The topics in this course are visited more than once, so your child willneed to do all assigned problems to get a complete understanding of the material.

  5. Study Buddies/Groups • Students are strongly encouraged to work together with another student or group of students when studying for this class.

  6. Steps for Success • Preparation • Attendance • Participation • Independent practice • Collaboration • Communication

  7. Assessments (Tests ) • Tests will be administered every three weeks on Math Test Day (Friday) if possible. If your child is absent for a test, he/she is expected to make up the test in the testing center between 7 AM and 4 PM the day he/she returns to school unless previous arrangements have already been made. Failure to do so will result in a 10% reduction in score. • If your child is absent for a test, but is present in school anytime during the day, he/she will be expected to take the test before leaving the building that day and/or contact me prior to leaving, or face a 10 percent reduction in score. • . Your child will be able to make test corrections on one test per quarter. Test corrections must be made in the test center within one school day of the grades for that test being posted. They can earn up to ½ the credit back on this test. Test corrections will involve identifying the mistakes made and showing a complete display of all work involved to arrive at solutions.

  8. Technology • Although I have access to a class set, the purchase of a TI-nspire or TI-84 plus calculator is highly recommended for this class. • The document model format of the TI-nspire allows the creation of interactive activities containing multiple applications that are linked together. Students will develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts through these guided investigations. • The TI-nspire calculator will carry your child through AP Calculus and beyond.
