  2. The author’s Purpose is the reason why a certain piece of text was written and what the reader was supposed to learn from it. To find author’s purpose we first read the text carefully. Afterword we ask, what was this text mainly about? What is the main idea? Then we ask ourselves why did the author want us to learn about that main idea? What is the purpose?

  3. People write for many reasons. A person may write to give you facts or true information about a subject. If so, they are writing toinform. Some authors write toentertain you. Other authors may write topersuade you or to try to get you to do or to believe something.

  4. What’s the difference between these two pictures? Both pictures show people with food in hand, in the days after Hurricane Katrina

  5. “A young man walks through chest deep flood water after looting a grocery store in New Orleans on Tuesday Aug. 30, 2005…” Looting- v. to steal or rob

  6. The Caption: “Two residents walk through chest-deep water after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store after Hurricane Katrina.”

  7. Looting vs. Finding Questions: What feeling do you get from each word? How do the different feelings match up with the differences in the pictures? Based on the caption, what can you understand about the author’s purpose?
