High School Mathematics Implementation Issues
Our Programs • Year Long • 4x4 Block • A/B Block • Some begin M1 in middle school • Support Configurations • Vary with scheduling model (full block, one period, skinny, etc.) • Most critical for SWD
Our Data • Fall of 2008, M1 EOCT used as field test, so no data • Spring 2009, M1 EOCT used as field test; released items with school, system, and state item analyses • Fall 2009, M1 and M2 EOCTs with individual, school, system, and state results
Our Data • Scale score required for meeting 400 • Scale score required for exceeding 450 • State mean scale score in M1 408 • RESA mean scale score in M1 413 • State mean scale score in M2 414 • RESA mean scale score in M2 411
Data Comparisons • Systems and schools tested a variety of types of students in varying numbers • Regular • Support • Accelerated • Repeaters • Some tested only one type of students • Some did not test at all
Data Comparisons • Use caution when comparing local data to the state and to other systems • Disaggregate within schools to determine performance of various types of students • Expect a clearer picture of the status of M1 and M2 EOCT performance in the spring when all students will have been tested
Support Issues • Guidance has been clear in regard to • Requirement to offer Support concurrently with grade level mathematics • Requirement to collaborate on the progress of Support students • Necessity of success for SWD • Recommendations are becoming clear in regard to heterogeneity in regular mathematics and homogeneity in Support
Issues with SWD • Original: SWD with appropriate IEP can take and pass M1 with Support, M2 with Support, and an equivalent course to M3 and earn a diploma without a fourth mathematics course • No equivalent course to M3 except AM2 • Current: M3 with Support • Rumor: Skip M3 and take an alternative to M4
Looking Ahead • Textbook Adoption: Varies • Some companies have published books • Some systems will use traditional precalculus books for M4 and AM3 • Some systems will use only the frameworks • There may be resources required for the alternative courses to M4
Looking Ahead • Possible Alternative Courses for M4 • Mathematical Decision Making • Mathematical Decision Making in Government and Industry • Mathematical Decision Making in Personal Finance • Georgia is Purchasing and Modifying • Rigorous
Looking Ahead • GPS GHSGT in Spring 2011 • M1, M2, and a few elements from M3 • Rumor: Mainly Level 1 Depth of Knowledge items with a few Level 2 or higher for Pass Plus • Rumor: Cut scores lower than EOCTS • Still talk of replacing with EOCTs
Looking Ahead • Grades 6, 7, and 8 new unit frameworks are being posted incrementally • Had understood that middle grades standards were undergoing precision review to be revised for use and assessment in 2010-11 • Rumor: No precision review, but new units will address any revisions
Looking Ahead • Common Core State Standards Initiative • Governors and state commissioners of education from 48 states, 2 territories and the District of Columbia committed to developing a common core of state standards in English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12. This is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).
Looking Ahead • Common Core Standards are available for review at corestandards.org until April 2. • Georgia mathematics personnel have been involved in the articulation. • May be linked to common assessments and financial incentives.
