  2. Mystery Spheres

  3. http://recoverytimes.com/images/wonka%20gobstoppers.gif Question: What will happen if we place the gobstoppers in the water?

  4. Hypothesis:If we place the gobstoppers in the water, then…….

  5. Materials: • 4 different colored gobstoppers • Large petri dish • Cup of water • Graduated cylinder or pipette • Colored pencils

  6. Procedures: Place the gobstoppers at the 12, 3, 6, & 9 o’clock position in the bowl. Slowly fill your dish with water just above the candy.

  7. Data/Observations:Draw three big circles.1. What the gobstoppers looked like in the bowl before you added the water. 2. Immediately after the water is added. 3. What the gobstoppers look like 5-7 minutes later. What is your conclusion?

  8. Conclusion: As the candies dissolve, the concentric layers of color disperse into the surrounding water, but adjoining colors do not readily mix to form new colors. This is because a thin layer of wax surrounds each layer, inhibiting the spread of colors. Further, the colored water forms clearly defined, wedge-shaped areas in the dish and changes color over time.)

  9. New Questions: Discuss and record at least one new question. *For example: What would happen if we put the gobstoppers in hot water?
