  1. AAMC and CBC: A Reductive History of our Beginnings • Medical schools identify need for CBCs • Pressures included: • State legislatures • Affiliated hospitals • AAMC recommends that all schools conduct CBCs on accepted applicants (August 2005 ) • AAMC Convenes CBC Advisory Committee • CBC Advisory Committee recommends AAMC-facilitated CBC, among other recommendations (May 2006)

  2. AAMC and CBC: From Decision to Implementation • AAMC Convenes CBC Implementation Advisory Committee (IAC) • Membership • 10 Medical Schools • 1 Pre-Health Advisor • 1 Student • Pilot Begins for the 2008 Entering Class • Certiphi Screening, Inc. Selected as Partner • May 2007 – October 2008 • IAC Decided to Continue Pilot for the 2009 Entering Class • Desire to complete at least 1 complete cycle prior to “Endorsement” • Too early in the process to complete all testing • Following 2008 cycle, IAC approved service.

  3. School Participation • Number of Medical Schools/Programs participating in AAMC-facilitated CBC Service: • 2008: 10 • 2009: 41 • 2010: Unknown, but an additional 33 schools have expressed interest thus far

  4. Pilot Statistics • Number (and percentage) of applicants who responded “Yes” or equivalent to AAMC felony, misdemeanor of military discharge questions: • 2008 • Felony: 34 (.08%) • Misdemeanor: 877 (2.2%) • Military Discharge: 10 (.02%) • 2009 • Felony: 19 (.05%) • Misdemeanor: 916 (2.3%) • Military Discharge: 13 (.03%)

  5. Self-Reported Applicant Data

  6. Report Turnaround +Calculated in calendar, not business, days +Parentheses include frequency of occurrence *”All Reports” includes “Time to Consent”, “Time to Release” and research and processing time. **Includes only those requests for which applicant has provided consent ***Includes only those reports that have already been released

  7. Changes for 2010 • Acceptance Embargo: • Checks will not be conducted prior to January 1 of the matriculation year • Acceptance actions received prior to January will be embargoed until January. • Due to the heavy volume we will send to Certiphi in January, we can expect initial January turnaround times to lengthen. • Usability: • AMCAS application text will be modified to ensure that applicants have all of the information they need to answer our self-report questions accurately.

  8. Reminder: Alternate List (AL) Checks • On May 15 of the calendar year of matriculation, participating schools can begin to initiate checks for waitlisted applicants by: • Setting the action to either “Alternate List” or “Other” • Setting the CBC flag in AP or via the AAUU • The number of Alternate List applicants selected for criminal background checks should not exceed 50% of the estimated class size • Reports that result from AL checks will not be available to the medical school until (if) the school accepts the applicant.

  9. More Information • Implementation by AMCAS • http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/faq/background.htm • “Informational Guide to Effective Practices for Criminal Background Checks” • Developed by the Committee on Admissions (COA) • http://www.aamc.org/members/gsa/committees/coa/start.htm
