Essay Task: Show how the beginning of the film ‘Sherlock Holmes’ is made exciting and how it leads on to the story of the film as a whole. (In your answer you should refer to such relevant features as: character, use of camera, key sequence, editing, sound / music, plot, setting...)
Planning your essay • There are two main parts to your essay task: 1) Show how the beginning of the film is made exciting. 2) Show how the beginning of the film leads on to the story of the film as a whole. In other words, what techniques does the director use to achieve this?
Essay Plan • Introduction • Introduce the text / director • Explain what your task is • Sum up the film’s plot /describe setting /state main themes /refer to main characters • Main Body of Essay • Address the 2 main parts of the task • Conclusion • Sum up the main points you have made in response to the task. Remind the reader what your essay was about and what you have found.
Main Body of Essay • How is the beginning of the film made exciting? (Go back over your opening sequence analysis sheet and describe the various camera and sound techniques you think are best used to create excitement. For each one you should also describe the effect they have on the audience.)
Main Body of the Essay 2) How the beginning of the film leads on to the story as a whole. Discuss each of the following elements of the film – explaining how first impressions from the Opening Sequence are developed throughout the rest of the film: • PLOT • SETTING • CHARACTERS • THEMES
PLOT • Describe the plot events at the beginning of the film and explain how they relate to / foreshadow what follows in the film: • Blackwood’s evil deeds / apparent supernatural powers • Holmes’s quest to defeat him in partnership with the police
SETTING • How is the setting first established? • What else in the film helps to establish when and where the story takes place?
CHARACTERS • Discuss the characters introduced and how our first impressions relate to how they act later in the film: • First impressions of Holmes &Watson and how they are confirmed as the film progresses • First impressions of Lord Blackwood and how they are confirmed later in the film • First impressions of the police and their relationship with Sherlock Holmes and how this is confirmed as the film progresses
THEMES • What are the main messages of the film and how are they highlighted at the start? • How are these ideas / themes highlighted as the film progresses?
Main Body of Essay: • It is up to you how you structure the main part of your essay: A)You might want to first discuss why the opening is exciting and then go on to explain why it is an effective opening. B)Alternatively, you might want to go through the opening, scene by scene, and for each explain why it is exciting and why it is effective in preparing the audience for what comes later in the film.
Conclusion • You must refer back to the essay task. For example: • “In this essay, I have shown how the beginning of the film ‘Sherlock Holmes’ is made exciting and how it leads on to the story of the film as a whole.” • You should then go on to sum up the main examples of techniques used to create excitement at the beginning. • Finally sum up how the beginning of the film leads on to the story of the film as a whole.
