Indian Power Industry Challenges • India is the world’s 3rd largest producer of electricity after US and China, but still has a Supply – Demand gap of 53,475MU(1) • Demand is surging(2) • 2016-17: 139.2 GW (with Peak Demand estimated at 218 GW) • 2021-22: 191.5 GW (with Peak Demand estimated at 298 GW) • To meet 300GW of peak demand, installed capacity must be 400GW accounting for Plant availability, infra maintenance, spinning reserve and losses(2). Even if average T&D loss of 32% remains same, India needs to add 135GW of power just to meet peak demand by 2017. • India experiences 5.1% base load deficit(1); unofficial estimates far higher • India’s intended GDP growth forecast of 7%-8% at risk; shortage of power will reduce GDP growth by 1.5% • CEA Report, May 2014 • 17th Electric Power Survey of India
Smart-Grid Evolution …from an inefficient, uncontrolled & overloaded Grid of yesterday to a controlled, self-healing, adaptive and intelligent 21st century network! AMI (Energy Audits, AMR) AMR SMART-GRID “SMART CITIES” • AMR for high value meters • High value, C&I, domesticonly AMI Infrastructure Advanced Metering Infrastructure solutions using Intelligent Smart Meter Agents and centralized software“low hanging fruits” (energy auditing, AMR) • Smart Grid Solution to “Smart City” • Smart Grid communications over MV lines at Sub-Stations & Feeders • Seamless upgrade of centralized Smart Grid management software
Benefits of Smart Grid AT&C Loss reduction Energy Accounting Seamless Power Trading Smart Grid Alternate Energy integration Peak Load & Demand Side Management Power Quality & QoS Asset Management Outage Management & Reliability
Case Study in West Bengal • AT&C losses could reduce from 20.2% to 8.7% saving Rs. 350 Croresin 15 years over a 55K customer base consuming 140MU annually • Additionally, other savings accrued total to Rs. 300 Crores over same period • Scaled to a million customers, savings potential go more than Rs.11,800 Crores in the same period led by better load management. • Hence making the distribution more efficient thereby lowering the cost of electricity to all consumers
