4/25 WARM-UP: CELL CYLCE

This informative video and activity recap the cell cycle, including DNA replication and the phases of mitosis. Topics covered include interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis, and the importance of proper DNA replication. The video also discusses cancer and how it develops due to genetic mutations.

  1. 4/25 WARM-UP: CELL CYLCE • Fill out as much as you remember on the blank cell cycle template on the handout in your folder. • Use the word bank to help you.

  2. I-P-M-A-T-C I…............. Passed My Algebra Test with a C Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokenesis

  3. VIDEO RECAP • Complete the questions on your handout as you watch the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woD6zvp-4E8

  4. VIDEO RECAP: CHECK YOUR ANSWERS • REPLICATED • INTERPHASE • ORGANELLES • DNA • ENZYMES • MITOSIS • VISIBLE • EQUATOR • POLES • NUCLEAR • COMPLETES

  5. INTERPHASE • 3 PARTS OF INTERPHASE: • G1: REPLICATING ORGANELLES • S: REPLICATING CHROMOSOMES • G2: CHECKS FOR ERRORS/PREPARES FOR MITOSIS • LET’S ZOOM IN ON S-PHASE!

  6. SYNTHESIS PHASE: DNA COMPONENTS RECAP nucleotides • DNA is composed of _________. • The _________________ and the ____________are always the same. The component that differs is the nitrogenous bases (or nitrogen base). BASE PARIRING RULES • Adenine always pairs with __________. • Cytosine always pairs with __________. Deoxyribose sugar phosphate Thymine Guanine

  7. SYNTHESIS PHASE: DNA REPLICATION RECAP • Replication: Synthesizing (making) DNA Remember! • The nitrogen bases are separated by weak, _________________ bonds being broken apart. • The sugar and phosphate molecules are held together by strong, _________________ bonds. hyrdogen covalent

  8. Let’s Practice! Try to sing the song with your eyes closed. Only look if you have to! We love DNAmade of nucleotides.Phosphate, sugar, and a basebonded down one side. Thymine and adeninemake a lovely pair, cytosine without guaninewould feel very bare.

  9. Try your best to circle the correct answer to the 4 statements below on your paper. • Mitosis occurs in: Somatic cells Gametes • Mitosis creates daughter cells that are genetically: DifferentIdentical • How many divisions occur during the process of mitosis? One Two • How many daughter cells are created as a result of mitosis? Two Four

  10. LET’S CHECK OUR ANSWERS • Mitosis occurs in: Somatic cells Gametes • Mitosis creates daughter cells that are genetically: DifferentIdentical • How many divisions occur during the process of mitosis? One Two • How many daughter cells are created as a result of mitosis? Two Four

  11. REVIEW MITOSIS HANDS • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYIMWgyQVtg

  12. PHASES OF MITOSIS RECAP

  13. CELL CYLCE AND MITOSIS IN SUMMARY:

  14. Let’s Practice! • For each picture, write the following things on your whiteboard. • Use your spinner to help you! The phase the cell is in. The defining characteristic of that phase.

  15. The phase the cell is in. The defining characteristic of that phase. Metaphase Lined up in the middle

  16. The phase the cell is in. The defining characteristic of that phase. Interphase No defined chromosomes

  17. The phase the cell is in. The defining characteristic of that phase. Telophase Daughter cells are pulling apart from each other, but not completely separated.

  18. The phase the cell is in. The defining characteristic of that phase. Prophase Chromosomes are formed (looks like worms)

  19. The phase the cell is in. The defining characteristic of that phase. Anaphase Chromosomes are pulling away. (Opposite sides of the cell)

  20. CANCER Cancer cells develop as a result of a genetic mutation. During the S-phase DNA was not replicated correctly. When the cell continues to divide (with the incorrectly replicated DNA) during mitosis, it interrupts the cell cycle. Cancer is caused by uncontrollable cell division of a type of cell in your body.
