  1. How to Feed Your Dog a Healthy High Protein Diet

  2. In our daily life we see dogs that are not thriving because nature’s rules are not being followed. 1. 2. 3. 4. Overweight dogs, dogs with itchy, flaky skin, dogs with coarse and brittle coats, dogs with poor energy levels and resistance to infection. 95 percent of the time these dogs will be consuming diets low in animal origin tissues and high in grain-based products. Inexpensive, corn-based diets are some of the worst.

  3. Choosing What To Feed Your Dog? It can be an overwhelming decision. Pet food stores are packed with different brands of food all containing clever marketing slogans to convince you they are the best for your dog. Many of these dog foods boast about containing extremely high levels of protein that claim to satisfy your dog’s instinctual need for meat as well as make them healthier and live longer The Biggest Misconceptions About Dogs: “Dogs are carnivores and should be fed a very high protein diet.” This is one of the biggest misconceptions about them.

  4. While dogs will quite happily eat virtually any meat that they come across, our canine companions are actually omnivores, which means that they can derive enough nutrition to survive from a range of sources, including meat, fish, vegetables, herbs, grains, and more. Role Of Protein: 1. Proteins are the building blocks of the body and an absolute necessity for daily function. Protein has several roles in the body, such as building and repairing muscles and other body tissues. It is needed to form new skin cells, grow hair, build muscle tissue, and more. 2.

  5. 3. It also assists in creating body chemicals like hormones and enzymes that are needed for normal function. 4. It provides energy (like carbohydrates do) and keeps the immune system strong. It is needed to form new skin cells, grow hair, build muscle tissue, and more. 6. It also assists in creating body chemicals like hormones and enzymes that are needed for normal function.

  6. It provides energy (like carbohydrates do) and keeps the immune system strong.Too Much Protein In A Meal? 1. However, when a dog consumes too much protein in a meal it cannot all be utilized at one time. The body will then excrete the excess protein through the kidneys and out of the body via urine. One of the main problems with too much protein in your dog’s diet is that it can quickly cause him to put on weight. This is because protein is a calorie-dense nutrient. 2. 3. 4.

  7. Thus the quality of the protein actually becomes more important than the actual amount as a high-quality protein is more bio-available and can be better absorbed by the body. 5. If very high levels of protein are fed for a long period, the protein not needed for energy can be stored as fat. 6. If you feed a diet with too little protein, over time the animal may show symptoms of weakness, weight loss, and a rough and dull-looking coat. How much protein is too much? Getting your dog’s nutrition right is essential if he is to enjoy a long, healthy, and active life.

  8. While there are many dog foods that are marketed specifically as being high protein, others may appear to be very broad-based products but still, actually contain dangerous amounts. For this reason, it is important to check food labels carefully so that you can be sure you pick a brand that has moderate protein levels. 1. For your information: 2. Food with more than 30% protein is considered high 3. Food containing between 21% – 29% is considered moderate

  9. Food with less than 20% protein is low and is usually only available by prescription for those dogs who have medical issues that dictate that they need a particularly low protein diet. Protein Requirements: Rather than look for a dog food that contains excessive levels of protein you should find one that is specifically formulated for your dog’s lifestyle, life stage, and size just like Wayne feeds best protein rich dog food. Protein is found in meats, eggs, and dairy products, as well as some grains and legumes. The dog’s body can’t store up protein as it can fat, and other nutrients, so this nutrient has to be supplied in the daily diet. Depending on the age and activity level of your pet, protein needs will vary.

  10. 1. Puppies, meanwhile, require more protein than adult dogs because their bodies are busy growing. Among breeds of puppies, there are different requirements for nutrients as well. For instance, large breed puppies like Labrador retrievers need a much different diet than a Yorkie for optimal growth. Feeding large breed puppies something that is too high in protein may make them put on weight too quickly causing abnormal joint development and making them more prone to issues like arthritis in the future. Those animals that work very hard (i.e. hunting dogs, sled dogs, search and rescue dogs, etc.) every day require a much greater amount of protein than a dog that doesn’t get much exercise. 2.

  11. Pregnant and lactating animals also need a much higher level of protein to meet their bodies ’ needs. When animals are sick or injured, they will have a greater need for protein to recover. As animals get older, the need for protein decreases but is still necessary. Dogs need meat! Dogs thrive on meat-based diets: Dogs are classified as omnivores. They can survive on a diet of either plant or animal origin if it is balanced and diverse. But to thrive and not merely survive, dogs should have a source of animal protein — MEAT! — in their diets.

  12. 1. Meats and meat by-products (meat by-products are blood and organ tissues and do not include hide, hair, hooves, and teeth) are exceptionally high-quality protein sources for dogs. But we all need to have an open mind and take a look at what by-products really are and they do not contain floor sweepings, old flea collars, gasoline, or machine parts. Meat such as chicken, poultry, beef, or fish should be the first ingredient listed in any dog food you judge to be “the best”. Dogs fed poor-quality diets look and feel great only if their caretakers also feed table scraps such as chicken, meat, eggs, cottage cheese, and other “left-overs.” 2. 3. 4.

  13. 5. Dogs can and do assimilate grains such as corn, barley, oats, wheat, and soybean meal though that grains provide mostly carbohydrates and only limited amino acid (protein) profiles. 6. Extra carbohydrate intake, above the immediate needs of the dog (which occurs often with grain-based diets), prompts internal enzyme factors to store that extra carbohydrate (sugar) as fat. Types: Almost all dog foods include meat protein in their ingredients. It is best to look at the ingredients list carefully to see if any of these are listed:

  14. 1. Animal fats and oils 2. Animal proteins 3. Bone meal 4. Fresh meat 5. Meat 6. Meat and animal derivatives 7. Meat meal 8. Poultry

  15. 9.Poultry fats The bottom line is this, and it is based on the fact: 1. Protein intake does not cause kidney damage in healthy dogs or cats of any age. So whatever you choose as “the best” diet for your dog, make certain that an animal tissue source is listed first in the ingredient list. The safest diets are those that have been developed by pet food companies that invest in scientific research, consult with veterinary nutritionists, and perform feeding trials to develop their diets. This will provide a pet food that is properly balanced without any excess nutrients that are unnecessary and, in some cases, harmful for your dog. 2. 3. 4.

  16. Feed your dog a high protein dog food with grain, meat-based diet, original pet food and, just as nature sets things up, your dog will thrive. Fear not the feeding of protein. Whichever variety you choose, if your pet’s diet is of high quality, is nutritionally complete and balanced for their life stage, size, and activity level, that your pet will be thriving happily.
