INTRODUCTION Chlorpyrifos (O,O-diethyl O-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl) phosphorothioate) is a pesticide widely used in Colombia for control of termites, mosquitoes, flies and various crop pests in soil and on foliage. It is highly toxic for fish and other organisms. It can be adsorbed strongly to soil, but easily transported by runoff polluting surface water bodies.

    3. The Calvache region is within the Cauca valley which is located at the south-west Colombia. The potato is the main crop grown in this area. High rates of several pesticides are applied to this crop. Almost 37% of production costs are due to the excessive use of pesticides. The main pesticide is the Chlorpyrifos The terrain is hilly (5ş, 20ş, 40ş slope) and downhill of the potato fields is located a floodplain which is threaten by the use of pesticides. INTRODUCTION

    8. Objectives General objective: Predict the chlorpyrifos risk pollution in the Calvache region using simulation models linked with GIS. Specific objectives: Know the transport of Chlorpyrifos in allophanic soil floodplain. Evaluate the chlorpyrifos leaching and runoff using the GLEAMS simulation model.
