Add a Touch of Personality with Vintage Sunglasses! There is a saying that all things old at one time or another will become the new once more. Over the last few years this has certainly become true with the re-emergence of vintage sunglasses; passing trends of yesterday becoming the cool and stylish looks of today. Within the domain of fashion accessories you don’t always witness fleeting fads as much as you do in clothing, and thankfully vintage sunglasses for women and men have once again taken centre stage, and it’s not hard to see why. I have always been a sunglasses enthusiast. To me they are little works of art with their wonderfully stylish and creative designs. This classic styling is appealing to both men and women, and has produced such accessory icons like the Cat eye sunglasses of the 50’s and the ever popular aviators by Rayban. Sunglasses are quite simply one of the most popular fashion accessories in the world. This popularity has of course been assisted by movie star and celebrity endorsements over the years. Audrey Hepburn's role as Holly Golightly in the film Breatfast at Tiffany’s was not only memorable for that black dress and pearl necklace, but also those oh so distinctive sunglasses she wore. What actually are vintage sunglasses? So what do we mean by vintage sunglasses. Many people believe they are second hand glasses that have been worn before. Not true. Most stockist (ourselves included here at Steed & Peel), supply what is known as Old New Stock. This is where the sunglasses were never sold at the time of production and have since been tucked away unworn over the years, but also kept in good clean condition.
Vintage sunglasses for sale Prices can vary. Many branded designs fetch big prices. Chanel sunglasses from the 1960’s have been known to go for up to $500. However those that are in less demand will come in at more reasonable prices allowing you to pick up a good quality vintage pair of say wayfarers or Raybans. If you are a real enthusiast then an original pair of 1960’s Persol 714’s (shades worn by Steve McQueen in the Thomas Crown Affair) could cost you $6,500! Who buys vintage sunglasses? So who actually buys them you may ask. Well just about anyone. You don’t need to be an enthusiast, you just have to appreciate their wonderful design and styling, and the workmanship that has gone into making them. Many aficionados will recall their frames back in the days when the joints would have been hand pinned, and due to their design and look they would have made you stand out among the crowd.Once you have them on they have the knack of making you feel like you really are strutting out in style. I have 5 vintage pair, my favourite being my cat eye tortoise shell ones that were originally made back in the 1980’s. What about polarisation? There has been quite a bit of debate over the past few years on whether the quality of the lenses in vintage sunglasses match up to the current UV regulations. Many in the know say they do, however if you are at all worried about the situation, then my advice would be to replace the lenses with some modern prescription ones; this will at least allow you to wear those cool stylish frames of your choosing this summer, in a style very few others will have.
