ABILITY OF OCT TO IDENTIFY RNFL DEFECT BEFORE STANDARD AUTOMATED PERIMETRY IN GLAUCOMA Orna Geyer, Tagil Arev-Fishelzon, Eitan Segev Carmel Medical Center, Haifa
In glaucoma, structural changes in the optic disc precede functional visual impairment
Purpose • To evaluate the capability of OCT for detection of nerve fiber loss before the appearance of a defect on visual field examination in glaucoma
VF OCT Methods • 29 glaucoma eyes with altitudinal VF defect • 29 healthy eyes of age-matched normal individuals
OPTIC DISC OCT VF Temporal nasal Correlations between retinal nerve fiber layer and visual field in eyes with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. Deleon-Ortega J. et al, Am J Ophthalmol. 2007

Take Home Message • OCT can recognize RNFL loss beyond a corresponding VF defect • OCT may be more sensitive than VF test for the detection of the extent of the glaucomatous damage
