  12. EMPLOYMENT STATISTICS IN ENGINEERING (NI) • 80% OF COMPANIES IN ENGINEERING & SCIENCE INDUSTRIES EMPLOY BETWEEN • 1 AND 10 PEOPLE • ONLY 10% OF PEOPLE WORKING IN ENGINEERING OR SCIENCE ARE SELF EMPLOYED • 82% OF THE ENGINEERING WORKFORCE IS MALE Source – SEMTA Feb 2011

FEMALES =ENGINEERING? • 15 % OF FEMALES COMPLETE A DEGREE IN ENGINEERING - YET… • ONLY 7.8% ACTUALLY BECOME ENGINEERS • Over a quarter of the electrical equipment and electronics workforce is female • Women are under represented across all sectors of engineering in craft, skilled, professional and management job roles Source – SEMTA Feb 2011

RECRUITMENT/SKILL SHORTAGES • 16% OF ENGINEERING COMPANIES RECRUITED A RECENT GRADUATE • 27% RECRUITED A WORKER AGED OVER 45 YEARS OF AGE • 65% RECRUITED A YOUNG PERSON AGED BETWEEN 16 AND 24 YEARS • 950 REQUIRED BY ALL SECTORS IN ORDER TO REPLACE THOSE WHO LEAVE DUE TO RETIREMENT & OTHER REASONS Source – SEMTA Feb 2011

ApprenticeshipsNI - Current Framework • Currently All Age apprenticeships – 16 – 60+ CHANGES FROM SEPTEMBER 2011 – NEW CONTRACTS WILL BE ISSUED MAY 2011 • Employer led from day one (wages paid by employer) • Apprentice completes: - Technical Certificate – either City & Guilds or Level 3 Diploma (day release) - NVQ Level 2 (either in workplace or day release) - Essential Skills either Numeracy, Literacy, ICT (only if they haven’t achieved a GCSE A*-C Grade in relevant qualification - Progression to NVQ Level 3 & completion of Technical Certificate. - Timescale – 3-4 years www.etcni.org.uk
