Purpose: • Once an individual has a thesis statement, he can begin to structure an essay for it. • An outline is a great way to organize a essay
Thesis Statement • Although smokers and cigarette companies do not like to believe it, smoking is a clear cause of cancer and, for this reason, it should be banned in all public places.
Support the thesis with key points • Outlaw Smoking • Smoking is harmful • Smokers suffer coronaries and lung cancer • Nonsmokers suffer from passive smoking • Everyone will benefit from a smoking ban
Look over the thesis • On a scratch sheet of paper create some key points to address in the research paper • However, list the ideas in bullet points using roman numerals. • Example: Outlaw Smoking • Smoking is harmful • Smokers suffer coronaries and lung cancer • Nonsmokers suffer from passive smoking • Everyone will benefit from a smoking ban
Now take some of those main ideas and begin to develop them • So, for example, take the idea “Smoking is harmful” and begin to develop it Example: • I. Smoking is harmful A. Medical Evidence 1. Coronaries 2. Lung Cancer B. Smoker’s acknowledgement of danger 1. Men 2. Women
Now take one of the ideas and develop it on a scratch sheet of paper. • Format it correctly. Every idea should be indented and have a bullet point (Examples: A. IV. 4. a. )
Example • I. Smoking is harmful A. Medical Evidence 1. Coronaries 2. Lung Cancer B. Smoker’s acknowledgement of danger 1. Men 2. Women Note---Notice that every idea is supported by a larger idea. For each supplemental idea, indent it further to the right and assign it a different bullet. Remember, there must be at least two points for each idea.
After completing the outline, it should resemble something like this.
