  1. The Central Nervous System

  2. Movie • Body Atlas

  3. The Nervous System • The nervous system gathers information about internal and external conditions, analyzes it and then initiates a response. There are two main parts of the nervous system: central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS)

  4. Central Nervous System • Is made up of the brain and spinal cord

  5. The Brain

  6. The Brain • Is the main control center for all activity. • Made up of 6 parts

  7. 1) Cereburm • Largest section, contains sensory and motor activities and intelligence.

  8. 2) Cerebellum • 2nd largest section, co-ordinates muscle movement and controls balance.

  9. 3) Brain Stem • Links the cerebellum with the spinal cord, houses brain centers responsible for autonomic functions and muscle tone.

  10. 4) Diencephalon • Thalamus (pain awareness, attention) and hypothalamus (body temp, appetite)

  11. 5) Limbic System • Regulates drives (hunger, aggression etc.)

  12. 6) Reticular Activating System • Maintains consciousness (files through the millions of sensory stimuli and focuses on which one is important to you!)

  13. The Spinal Cord

  14. The Spinal Cord • The information pathway for connecting the brain to the PNS • Runs through the vertebrae

  15. Peripheral Nervous System • Located OUTSIDE the CNS • Network of information • 2 parts: autonomic and somatic

  16. 1) Autonomic • Involuntary • A) Sympathetic: prepares body for fright or flight, releases adrenaline, increases blood flow. • B) Parasympathetic: return body to normal, opposite effect.

  17. 2) SOMATIC • Afferent (sensory nerves) carry information from sensory receptors to the CNS • Efferent (motor nerves) carry infro from the CNS to organs • Receive and process info • Give sensation of pain/heat/cold etc. • Responsible for muscle movement

  18. Autonomic and Somatic Nervous Systems
