  3. Emotional vs. Literal Certain words have emotional overtones, or connotations, that go beyond their literal meanings, or denotations. Consider the difference between the two words in the following pairs: Unusual / odd Assertive / bossy Young / immature Frugal / cheap Proud / smug Firm / strict
