  1. Economics of Religion A Summary of the discussions at ace 2011

  2. Perceptions About Religion • Perceptions: • Ignorance • Limiting • Backward • Overall, a very negative view of religion. • “The Tree of Life” a new movie by Brat Pitt. • The movie was a great example of not being overwhelmed by the immensity of the universe. • Importance of the inner (enfusi) matters showed clearly.

  3. Sincerity (Ihlas) Primary importance Attendance and participation in religion activity was shown to be correlated to some personal benefit. Physical and/or spiritual. Ustad’s principle of “terk-iterk” seems so crucial. “To leave what you have already left” or “To sacrifice what you have already sacrificed”.

  4. Findings No correlation between professionals and religion. High correlation between worldly success/individual qualities and religious activity. No positive correlation between age and religion.

  5. Discussions • Sacrifice: • Based on a reciprocal relationship. • Showed that certainty lowered sacrifice. • Lesson: If you sacrifice with the expectation of receiving something back, you will lower the quantity of your sacrifice if you don’t receive what you had expected. • Allah • Group • Work • Family

  6. Discussions cont. • Extremism • Free-Rider problem existent in religion. • Extremists are more successful because they resolve this free-rider problem. • They make people work harder. • They eliminate people who don’t meet the criteria. • Financing • Government • Production • Belief (Donation)
