  1. Reading Velocity/Time Graphs

  2. What is a V/T graph? • A velocity/time graph shows the velocity of an object per unit time • The two most important aspects of the graph are the shape and the slope of the line

  3. Shape of a v/t graph • What does this represent? • Constant velocity

  4. Shape of a v/t graph • What does this represent? • Positive velocity, positive acceleration

  5. Shape of a v/t graph • What does this represent?

  6. How can you tell if an object is moving in the positive or negative direction? • With a velocity time graph, the velocity is positive whenever the line lies in the positive region of the graph (above the x-axis) • The velocity is negative whenever the line lies in the negative region of the graph (below the x-axis)

  7. Positive or Negative?

  8. How can you tell if the object is speeding up or slowing down? • If the object is speeding up the magnitude is increasing • If the object is slowing down the magnitude is decreasing. • Whether or not the magnitude is positive or negative does not matter • If the number gets larger, the object is speeding up, if the number gets smaller the object is slowing down.

  9. Speeding up or Slowing Down? • http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/1DKin/U1L4a.cfm

  10. Slope of the line • The slope of the line determines if the acceleration is great or small. Velocity Time

  11. Warm up (pg. 2-same as Friday) • Draw and describe the motion in the following velocity vs. time graphs (remember these are not the same as distance vs. time graphs)
