The Lord said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites: ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised. Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over.’ 2:21 - 35 JHK

7. ‘When the days of her purification…are over, she is to bring to the priest…a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering. He shall offer them before the Lord to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean…But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. 12. “Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. Simeon 1) Named after second son of Joseph; likely of that tribe. 2) Righteous and devout. 3) Waiting for the consolation of Israel. 4) Holy Spirit was “upon” him. 5) Given Divine revelation. 6) Prophet (moved by the Spirit to speak). παράκλησις (parakeesis) – “consolation” ▪consolation, comfort, solace. ▪that which affords comfort or refreshment ▪of the Messianic salvation (Messiah would be consoler or comforter) 2:21 - 35 JHK

28. 1) It was a place between heaven and earth. 2) It was the place of God’s presence. 3) It was where God’s people came to meet with him. 4) It was the place where sin was atoned for. 5) It was the center of life and faith and worship. “May your eyes be open toward this temple night and day, this place of which you said, ‘My Name shall be there,’ so that you will hear the prayer your servant prays toward this place.” (I Kings 8:29) “Then Solomon said, ‘The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud; I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.’” (I Kings 8:12-13) “When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?” (Isaiah 1:12) “The duty of the Levites was to help Aaron’s descendants in the service of the temple of the Lord: to be in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the house of God.”(I Chronicles 23:28) “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.” (Luke 18:10) The Temple JHK

29. “Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, ‘As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.’” (Luke 21:5-6) The Temple JHK

30. “One of the soldiers…snatched a blazing piece of wood and, climbing on another soldier's back, hurled the flaming brand through a low golden window that gave access to the rooms that surrounded the sanctuary. As the flames shot up, the Jews let out a shout of dismay that matched the tragedy…for the sacred structure that they had constantly guarded with such devotion was vanishing before their very eyes…Most of the slain were peaceful, weak and unarmed, butchered where they were caught. The corpses mounted; a stream of blood flowed down the Temple steps… The Temple JHK

31. “…Caesar entered the building with his generals and looked at the holy place of the sanctuary and all its furnishings, which exceeded by far the accounts current in foreign lands and fully justified their splendid repute in our own…While the Temple was ablaze, the attackers plundered it, and countless people caught by them were slaughtered. There was no pity for age; children and old men, laymen and priests, alike were butchered; every class was pursued and crushed in the grip of war, whether they cried out for mercy or offered resistance. 32. “Through the roar of the flames streaming far and wide, the groans of the falling victims were heard…There were the war cries of the Roman legions as they swept onwards en masse…The Temple Mount, everywhere enveloped in flames, seemed to be boiling over from its base; yet the blood seemed more abundant than the flames and the numbers of the slain greater than those of the slayers. 36. “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator…” (Romans 1:25a) “The Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and in visions of God he took me to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the idol that provokes to jealousy stood…I went in and looked, and I saw portrayed all over the walls all kinds of crawling things and unclean animals and all the idols of Israel…He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? 37. “And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.” (Matthew 5:30) “No one can serve two masters.
