  2. To reduce injuries and their costs, three key components must be in place

However, insufficient objective data often limits a company’s effectiveness • Job descriptions • Often do not contain information about the physical demands that are required to perform the job • Not kept current • May not reflect the job as it is performed today • No objective-based qualification testing for • Return to work • Hiring • Placement

Adding Objective data provide opportunities for improvement in the three key areas • Safe Jobs • Better job descriptions • Ergonomic changes to reduce stressors and risk • Qualified Workers • Improved return to work process • Physical qualification of new hires and potential transfers • Safe Work Practices • Employee training on cumulative trauma disorders

Functional Job Descriptions (FJDs) identify physical stressors and are essential for effective return to work and hiring/placement decisions • Identify ergonomic modifications that can reduce physical stressors • Provide one-half the input for return to work and hiring/placement decisions • Establish the foundation for a systematic ergonomic program that will meet the proposed OSHA ergonomic guidelines

Promoting further employee involvement will reduce injury costs • Enhanced training on the identification/prevention and care of Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs) will help reduce them • Work conditioning program to help improve workers’ physical abilities • Employee participation in Ergonomic Teams and involvement in ergonomic process creates employee ownership in safety
