  1. Topic 3Spreadsheets and Modelling Lesson 1Introducing the Unit

  2. What are we learning today? We are learning to use spreadsheet models to answer what if…? questions What I’m looking for using spreadsheet features to find the answers rather than working them out ourselves This is because spreadsheet models can be used to analyse data in complicated ways so that we can find the answers to questions

  3. Your Task • Worksheet • Answer the questions about the financial model of a zoo

  4. Terminology Recap A worksheet Columns (letters) Text labels Numeric data Each cell has a unique cell reference e.g. D13 Text labels Rows (numbers) Column DRow 13

  5. The formula can also be viewed and edited here in the formula bar Formula Start with = then create formula When you press Enter, the formula will automatically be calculated.

  6. The data can be sorted in alphabetical or numerical order – using the AZ icons The data can be displayed on a chart using the Chart Wizard icon By dragging the fill handle, you can copy and paste the formula into other cells C7*D7 What formula should have been generated in cell E7?

  7. What is a model? • (In ICT terms!) • Tool that enables you to put different data into a system and look at the outcomes it produces • Tool you can use to ask ‘what if…’ questions by changing variable or formulae

  8. Why use a spreadsheet? • Speed • Accuracy • Automatic calculations • Data can be changed easily

  9. In this unit you will learn: • To use a spreadsheet to generate models • To ask questions of the models in order to analyse and present data • To use techniques to generate more effective models • To understand the relationship between input and output values in a model • To discuss other types of modelling that can be used to simulate different events

  10. Spreadsheet Exercises • Go onto the VLE • ICT > Years 7-9 > Year 8 > Topic 3 – Spreadsheets and Modelling > Lesson 1 • Lesson 1 Spreadsheet Exercises.xls • Follow the instructions on screen to complete the exercises

  11. Imagine a School Fete • Go onto the VLE • ICT > Years 7-9 > Year 8 > Topic 3 – Spreadsheets and Modelling > Lesson 1 • Lesson 1 Spreadsheet Practise.xls • Use the worksheet to complete the spreadsheet

  12. Plenary • What is a model? • What does a formula always start with? • What is the symbol for multiplication in a formula?

  13. Homework Spreadsheet Crossword of key words
