Archetypes How are archetypes used to create meaning? Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech
Elements of a paragraph: Claim - creates the argument - has three elements: What, How, Why Background - provides some context for the evidence - fills in the audience with needed information Evidence - the LOGOS that supports your claim - can be direct quote, paraphrase, statistics, anecdotes, etc.
Interpretation / Explanation - this is where you unpack the evidence for how it is proving the claim - do NOT just retell what the evidence says - do NOT EVER say “This quote shows…” (or any variation) to begin your interpretation Exit sentence - this is where you provide a sense of closure - address the Why element of your claim - answer the question “so what?”
Assignment: You are to write a three-part claim about MLK’s speech – the how are the elements he uses to create meaning (the why).
