1. Physical Development • Puberty – the time when teens start to develop the physical characteristics of men and women • Hormones – chemical substances in your body will reach a high level, stimulate body changes and development of the male and female reproductive systems
Age range 10 – 17 • Body shapes change • Girls usually mature 1st (by 2 years on average) • Individual growth rate • Growth spurt – period of rapid growth • Larger muscles • Better use of muscles
Males – physical changes • Neck Thickens • Facial Hair • Voice Deepens • Shoulders Broaden • Body Hair
Females – physical changes • Hips Widen • Breasts Enlarge • Hour Glass Shape • Menstruation • Body Hair
Body changes • Acne • Nutrition, heredity, environment • Body odor • Activity level, proper grooming, heredity

Personality • the combination of feelings, traits, attitudes and habits • Heredity – traits and characteristics passed from parents to children • Eye color, height, hair color, personality traits, skills • Environment – everyone around you (people, places, things and events) • Dress, behaviors, attitude, personality traits, etc.
Maturity • Reaching full development • Make wise decisions • You have to work at becoming mature in all areas, does not just happen
