  3. Promotes kindness to animals • They are considered the best National animal welfare organization • Provides national leadership in 3 areas • Caring for pets parents and pets • Providing positive outcomes for at-risk animals • Serving victims of animal cruelty

  4. History of ASPCA • Established in 1866 • Founded by Henry Bergh • Early efforts of the ASCPA mainly focus on horses and livestock • They did a little work with cats and dogs too • ASCPA stands for The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

  5. Accomplishments • First humane organization to have legal authority to investigate and make arrests for crimes against animals • In 1867 David Heath was the first person the ASCPA sentence for animal cruelty • He was sentenced to ten days is prison for beating a cat to death • Upon hearing the verdict Heath said that the arresting officer should be disemboweled • He was given an additional fine of $25 for his comment

Accomplishments (cont.) • They opened a hospital for animals in 1912 • ASPCA doctors helped develop the use of anesthesia in 1918 • In 1918 they operated on a horse with a broken kneecap • This procedure was considered nearly impossible at the time • In 1961 they performed their first open-heart surgery on a dog
