Caravels – small but very sturdy ships that were easy to maneuver and sailed fast.
Cartography – the science of designing maps. Helped with navigation, noted dangerous obstacles.
Compass: Helped with general direction, but not accurate enough for open ocean navigation.
Astrolabe: Allowed navigators to figure out latitude – most important for navigation.
Lateen or Triangular sails – allowed ships to tack and sail into the wind.
