and this… It was the time of year Farmer Bailey liked best, when summer turned to fall. He whistled as he drove along. A cool breeze blew across his face through the truck’s open window. Then it happened. There was a loud thump. -The Stranger by Chris Van Alsberg

Beginnings for stories are called leads.In order for it to be a great lead you need to “hook” your reader.
1. Question What could be scarier than spending a night in a haunted house?
2. Dialogue “I dare you to stay in there past midnight,” my brother said.
3. Interesting Fact According to a survey done last year, half of all kids bark in there sleep.
4. Opinion or Feeling My name is A.J. and I HATE school!
5. Single Word Me? Scared?
6. Leaves the reader wondering There was a sound in the basement, and I knew it wasn’t just a mouse.
Now, lets do a quick refresher. A great lead sentence will “hook” your reader into your story. A lead sentence is the first one of your story. A lead sentence should be one of these types: A question Dialogue Interesting fact Opinion or feeling Single word Leaves the reader wondering
Your turn to practice. Lets see how many of you don’t have me snoozing because you came up with a great “hook” to get me to read!
Think about what your teacher is having you write about. Answer these questions by writing a grabber for each. On a sheet of paper 1. write down a question that you could start your story with.
On a sheet of paper 2. write down a single word that you could start your story with.
On a sheet of paper 3. write down a sentence that would leave the reader wondering.
On a sheet of paper 4. write down an opinion or feeling that you could start your story with.
